Each week, for 15 - 20 minutes, students meet in small, need-based, guided reading groups to focus on increasing reading fluency and comprehension through thoughtful discussion. During this time students apply the reading skills and strategies discussed during our large group reading time. It is a time where students can work in small groups reflecting and responding to books they can read.
Every six weeks students participate in individual reading assessments. This is important as Kindergarten literacy work rests on keeping up-to-the-minute with how students are progressing. On-the-Mark assessments determine a student's reading level allowing them to be placed in the best suited guided reading group. Of all grades, the different levels of students in Kindergarten are most varied, and the changes, and plateaus, are especially intriguing. Because of this, students are reassessed periodically throughout the year to help track reading growth and leveled placement. As students are reassessed, I will communicate home to share your child's exciting progress.
A great resource to find authentic literature according to your reading level is available. Use this Scholastic Book Wizard website to find books to order or check out for your child to read. In addition, throughout the school year, I will be providing additional resources and up-to-date lists to help you provide additional leveled literature at home.
